Giant Sequoia - Paradise Ridge Trail

The first hike we did during my visit to California was the Paradise Ridge Trail in Sequoia National Park.  This was an incredibly beautiful (as if there is such a thing as a non-beautiful trail in the Sierras!) up a steep hillside to Paradise Peak.  Along the way the trail wound through several stands of giant sequoias.  It is humbling, to say the least, to stand in the shadow of these awesome giants.  It is quite easy to get a sore neck while hiking in this forest, as you are constantly tempted to stare up into the canopy of these magnificent old-growth trees.  This hike was a great intro to the Sierras for me, and a teaser for the awesomeness that was yet to come :-)

Below: Here is another photo of the same tree, with Jessica standing by the tree for some scale.
