Zaagibagaa Giizis - The Leaves are Budding Moon
The May full moon (Zaagibagaa Giizis in the Ojibwe language) rises over Lake Superior behind the Spirit Tree in Grand Portage, Minnesota.
Actually, this photo was taken a couple of days past the "official" full moon, but it is still almost full. My favorite time to photograph the moonrise is two or three days after the official full moon, as the moon rises after it has gotten dark and you can capture stars in the sky along with the first beautiful glow of moonlight. If you're extra lucky, as I was on this night, you'll get some really nice clouds to complement the scene as well. I've seen a beautiful moonrise or two over the years and this one definitely ranks as one of the best!
