River Bubbles

An example of something that I could watch and photograph for hours... floating bubbles on the Pigeon River.  These bubbles were just below a very small section of rapids.  As the water tumbled through the rocks these bubbles would form and float a short distance down the river before popping.  Some of them had really nice "domes" to them.

Waterfall Mist and Cedar

This little cedar tree sure found a nice spot to grow.  It receives an almost constant barrage of spray from a nearby waterfall.

Beaver Lodge and Canada Geese

It's another chilly and snowy spring day today.  The Canada Geese seem a little perturbed by it as well and have decided to just wait out the weather on top of this beaver lodge.

Beaked Hazelnut

A couple of weekends ago ago we came across these really cool little "flowers".  At the time we had no idea what they were.  According to a couple of sources we've determined that its most likely Beaked Hazelnut.  The little buds were incredibly small, no bigger than the eraser head on a #2 pencil!

April Aurora

Last night sure was beautiful.  Clear skies and calm winds with some really nice aurora activity!  We drove out to a local lake to watch the lights and boy we sure weren't disappointed! The crescent moon hovered above the treetops to the left while the aurora danced in the sky to the right. It was pretty chilly out (25 degrees) so I took a few still photos then set up a timelapse to run for 20 minutes. While the timelapse was recording we sat in the car and listened to Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Star Talk" podcast.  We were listening to an old favorite from 2017, about "The Great American Eclipse".  It was a wonderful night :-)

Spring Morning on the Pigeon River

This morning sure was beautiful along the Pigeon River!  Kind of hard to believe the temp was only 35 degrees when I took this picture.  It just has a much warmer "feel" to it, in my opinion. The north woods of Minnesota never ceases to amaze me with its beauty.

The robins are back!

My first robin sighting of this year. I was taking a morning walk in the woods last week and was lucky enough to spot this fellow in a dark stand of trees. The light was really low so I had to be super steady in order to get this shot.

Spring Evening at High Falls

Grand Portage State Park, MN

This evening all of the fog that was blanketing the landscape in the morning was gone leaving a completely different view of High Falls.  The sky was awesome so I arranged my composition to show more of it than I normally would.

Foggy Morning at High Falls

Grand Portage State Park, MN

It was just a little bit foggy this morning (High Falls always looks cool in the fog) and after getting a decent amount of rain over the past couple of days I figured the falls would be flowing nicely.  The water level rose about 3 feet from the rain.  A few days ago there wasn't any water flowing down on the right side of the falls but today it was gushing. So much fun to photograph when its like this!

Spring Labrador Tea

I always love seeing labrador tea when I'm out in the woods but always struggle when it comes to photographing it.  Unlike most of the photos I've taken of it over the years, I rather like how this one turned out.

Early spring lightning storm

We just had one heck of a lightning show roll across Lake Superior in Grand Portage!  The thunder and lightning went on for well over an hour and for a long time there was no rain with it which is unusual. At times the lightning flashes were almost a constant flickering throughout the entire sky.  Our house was seemingly surrounded by it. I shot these photos through my office window which overlooks Grand Portage Bay and Pete's Island. What an awesome night!

A sure sign of spring

A welcome sight for many and a sure sign that spring will soon be in full swing, pussy willows sure are beautiful and the way they capture and reflect the sunlight is mesmerizing.
